From the 1990 US Open that introduced him to the world to
the 2002 US Open that marked his farewell, Pete Sampras
reset the standards used to measure greatness in men's
professional tennis, riding one of the best serves of all
time, mastery of old-school serve-and-volley tennis and
cool but steely determination to new heights.  No one has
ever won the US Open at a younger age (19), and only two
men have won the event when they were older than
Sampras in 2002 (31 years, 27 day).  He won a record 14
Grand Slam tournament single titles by winning more
Wimbledon titles (7) than any man in modern times and
the second-most US Open titles of any man in history, with
a couple of Australian Open  championships to boot.
Sampras highlighted his record 286 weeks at No. 1 by
ending six consecutive seasons in the top spot, something
no man or woman has ever done in computer ranking
history.
